"All fifteen crew were airlifted off the Phoenix after it ran aground and although the crew were reportedly in no immediate danger they were taken off the vessel for safety precautions," said National Sea Rescue Institute spokesman Craig Lambinon.
None of the crew was injured, he said.
SA Air Force 15 Squadron was placed on high alert by the Transnet National Ports Authority following reports that the tanker was experiencing problems.
It was believed that the 164-metre bulk tanker broke its anchor and drifted towards shore.
It was reportedly en route to a scrap yard and was carrying a small skeleton crew.
