An Ethiopian cargo vessel was attacked by Somali pirates near the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) in the Gulf of Eden. It is understood grenades struck the ship damaging a crane on the deck, but there are no injuries reported to the crew. The vessel managed to evade the attack.
Observers say pirates are showing an increase in activity once again with the monsoon season in the Indian Ocean forcing them to operate further north where there is a heavy navy presence.
last one month, there have been around 15 attacks on merchant ships.
